Choosing a Hosting Service: A Checklist for Business Owners
Choosing a Hosting Service: A Checklist for Business Owners
by: Maria MarsalaFor a website to appear on the Internet, you require a server that is usually provided by a web hosting company. Hosting companies are paid monthly, quarterly or yearly. Some companies come with guarantees, too. Recommendations from other business owners and web designers are excellent ways to find a good hosting service. One of the primary features I recommend is that the hosting companies can grow with you. If they only offer one package, and you need more, your web site maybe down for up to 2 days and/or you may have to change the code on any forms you use to match the new server settings. Dont be afraid to read a hosting services subscriber information, FAQs (frequently asked questions), note areas or bulletin boards on their sites. A good hosting company offers as many of these basics as possible: This is a hosting company I can easily afford. They offer a Money Back Guarantee. They have information on their site about server uptime/downtime. The company contacts me, at my primary email address, when/if there are any server problems. (Could be problems when theyre updating their server, hurricanes, etc.) They offer your own IP address http://postmaster.aol.com/info/ipexpl.html They provide at least 5 POP email accounts (example yourname@yoursitesname.com) Your email accounts should include Alias Accounts, which look like a POP account to the person sending you an email; however, the address is actually an alias that’s forwarded to any other email account you choose. And when you send an email back to the original sender, it is the forwarding email account, NOT the yourname@yoursitename.com that the sender receives. There is a Web-based Email system (a place for you to read your email online). If not, my favorite is www.e-mol.com An easy system for email forwarding (and vacation notice) capability. 24-hour customer service, by phone, even if its a long distance call, is best! 50 mg space (the space you need for a 100 page website with each page being approx. 8×11) 2 Gig Data Transfer/month (this will be enough for quite a while!) Front Page Extensions only necessary if you create a web site with MS Front Page Cgi/PHP/MySQL (or asp availability). Check with your designer to see what youll require for forms to be created). Easy Control Panel: This feature is especially important if you want to maintain your site or have someone else easily maintain it. It’s the one place to visit when making changes to your site, add addresses, etc Statistics – Does your hosting companies plan include monthly and yearly statistics on each of your web pages? Will you know how someone found each of your web pages? Secure server, Shopping cart (and other things youll need to set up a merchant account system) Server type: The type of server a hosting company you choose, should take into consideration the programs you will run for things like your shopping cart, affiliate program, web site pages, etc. If you’re using ASP, JSP, PHP, CGI, PL, or CSS, these programs will influence the choice of a server and vice-versa. Your hosting service may use Windows (which for example accepts ASP but not PHP), Linux or Unix-based (Apache/FreeBSD/etc.) servers. Password Protection If you have plans to create a membership are or clients only area of your site, this is something to consider. Newsletter or announcement list Auto-responders (not usually available on very low cost hosting packages)Special thanks to wise-women.org and HTML-on-the-WEB@yahoogroups.com for some assistance with this list.About The Author
Home Improvement Drywall
To start drywall you must follow a few simple steps for improving home. You will need a Putty Trial, Tray, sandpaper, and joint putty, scraper.
To start sand down the walls removing any lumps in the wall, and finishing the procedure by wiping down the wall removing any sand, sanding until you see clear white area…this is not applicable for wood area walls.
If you have, holes in the wall use the putty trial and scraper to apply the joint putty to fill in the holes. Sometimes an extra coating is required, thus repeat the procedure until the hole is filled and scraped down to smoothness.
Before applying drywall makes sure, you use the sandpaper to smooth out the surface and wash the wall, freeing the area of any dust. Make sure the are is dry before sandpapering the area.
After you have finished the steps, you can start the drywall procedure by following the systematic steps provided to you in the kit purchased.
Once you finish the drywall procedure, you can apply paint to make the area look more appealing. Most likely, you will need to apply a couple of coats of paint to reach an acceptable effect. Allow the paint to dry and then touch up by re-arranging the furnisher, curtains, et cetera.
Make sure you finish the base coat and allow paint to dry before putting anything against the drywall area. To paint base coat shield the area above the base line and before painting, make sure the entire area is shielded.
After painting is complete and dry, using your creative mind can help you to decide how to design the room while adding texture. If you want to do something fancy, buy new curtains that blend with the new paint. The curtains can offset the new paint. Flowers vases and flowers will also offset the paint.
Drywall is not difficult really, rather it is time consuming…
If you want to get more creative after finishing the paint you could drywall the ceiling by twirling, giving it the popcorn effect.
You could also use the same approach to get the popcorn effect in the walls if you choose to do so. The twirls could be designed carefully to appeal as flowers, roses, popcorn, leafs, et cetera. Creativity is the key to improving homes with style.
Again, adding a new appeal by purchasing curtains that match the paint, or organizing the room until it brings out the new look can enhance your homes appeal. The homes that are improved bring grander awards once the process is finished since home improving is building the equity of your home.
Overall, it may cost you less than a hundred to drywall and paint your new home, or it could cost a little over a hundred to get the job done, but in the end, you will be rewarded, since the value of your home will increase.
Imagine improving your home for around a couple hundred and increasing the value of the home to thousands for your efforts.
Home improvement is the process of raising equity while building self-confidence and self-esteem. The time you spend remodeling the home, is less the time you will spend later also.
In other words, the longer you permit wear and tear, damages, or other problems to go, the longer it will take you to get the improvements finished.
Therefore, if you have the funds now to improve your home, putting it off will only add you stress later. Again, drywall is fairly simple, but it is time consuming, and the longer you wait the more time you will spend repairing or remodeling your home.
Tip
If you want to get creative, instead of buying new curtains to bring out the new paint, try making your own. The patterns are available, with systematic instructions, but if you buy cheap material and cut out the pattern by using your old curtains, you could come up with a wonderful concoction. Furthermore, creating your own design is far more cheaper than making the actual purchase.

Tips for Travelling to Malaysia
For those looking for a different cultural experience, or even just a great holiday destination, then adding Malaysia to your travel list will not disappoint. A Malaysian holiday can be a relaxed resort style getaway on one of the islands such as Sabah or Langkawi, bargain shopping and sight-seeing in the capital Kuala Lumpur, or perhaps a combination of both to let you experience the diversity of this amazing country.
For first time travelers to Malaysia there are several tips that will make your holiday less stressful and infinitely more enjoyable, such as:
Check Health Warnings
Before leaving for Malaysia visit your family doctor to check health warnings for the area you intend to visit. If you intend to do any hiking or rainforest walks then you will need to start taking malaria tablets around a week before your departure. Your family doctor will be able to advise of any other precautions or medications that you need.
Airport Transfers
By far the easiest and cheapest way to get from the airport into the capital is via the KLIA Express (airport express train). The train is very modern with video screens showing points of interest and things to do in Malaysia while you enjoy a comfortable ride into Kuala Lumpur in around 35 minutes. Using a bus or taxi transfer will normally take around one hour by comparison and cost a little more. An added convenience when using the KLIA Express to connect with a departing flight is the facility to book your luggage onto your flight from the central train station in Kuala Lumpur (providing you do this at least 2.5 hours before your flight).
Taxi Fares
Always ask how much the fare will be to get to your destination before getting into the taxi. Taxi fares in Malaysia are for the most part quite reasonable however at times a naive traveler can be easy pickings, especially on a return trip from an outlying area so be sure to ask for the cost of the fare beforehand and if it seems too high then you can usually find another taxi to get a better deal. The exception to this however is during peak hours in Kuala Lumpur when you will pay more because of traffic delays. Your hotel concierge can advise you on what the busiest traffic times are likely to be. Planning your movements around the capital outside of these times will save you money if you’re on a tight budget.
Don’t drink the tap water
To reduce your chances of having your holiday ruined by tummy upsets it is wise not to consume the local tap water. During your stay keep these points in mind:
1) Clean your teeth and toothbrush with bottled water.
2) Remember to specify “No Ice” when ordering cocktails or mixer drinks. (Many of the more up-market resorts and hotels have ice that has been made using filtered or bottled water which is perfectly safe, however if you wish to be extra cautious then it is safer to forgo the ice).
Buy personal items from a supermarket
Make purchases of personal care items such as sunscreen, toothpaste or bottled water from a local supermarket instead of the resort or hotel where you are staying. Although the prices of these items may not seem too expensive you will normally find a supermarket or small convenience store somewhere close to the resort where these items are up to a third of the price that you will pay at the resort. Any money you save on these purchases can be used for souvenir shopping instead.
Restaurants
When you’re staying in regional areas and choosing somewhere to eat keep in mind that you are no longer in a western country. Malaysia is a relatively poor country which is more evident in outlying areas than it is in the capital. While in your home country a restaurant in a run down looking building could indicate a possible health risk this is not the case in regional areas of Malaysia as many of the buildings are old because of the general poverty of the population. The best guide for choosing a restaurant is if the local people are happy eating there it is a good indication that the food is safe.
Keep valuables concealed
Always keep wallets, purses, mobile phones etc in your pockets or backpack to avoid the attention of pickpockets, especially in larger cities. Although not a major problem any large population has its share of thieving so it is best to keep your valuables secure. It is also wise to carry your backpack on the front of your body in certain areas such as the china town markets in Kuala Lumpur where it can be quite crowded giving pickpockets a chance to access valuables within the outer compartments of a backpack.
Malaysia is a great holiday destination with excellent shopping, friendly people, wonderful scenery, and delicious food and by following these simple tips you’ll have such a memorable time you’ll want to return again and again

My wife and I just returned from a western Caribbean cruise. We landed in three ports. Following are details of our trip including information about the ship and the ports.
Getting There
We traveled Vancouver – Toronto-Miami via Air Canada. This part of the trip was uneventful and went smoothly. The only potential glitch was a US immigration officer that seemed to want to pick a fight. When we didn’t respond to his taunts and innuendos he stopped his attempts to engage us and grunted us on.
We stayed at the Airport Hilton. Getting there was the part of the trip that was most poorly organized. We seemed to wait forever in the airport for the Greyhound bus that was to pick us. The Carnival crew that was orchestrating the transfer didn’t seem to be anymore knowledgeable as to what was happening than we were.
Our experience at the Hilton was pleasant. We found the people to be helpful. I did speak with one other person whose experience was different. His luggage had not made it through and so he asked the hotel staff for a toothbrush and toiletries. He reports that they were annoyed with his request and were rude to him. He experiences a lot of pain from cancer so he may have been overly sensitive to the responses. We did not see any rudeness or annoyance.
Since we had a few hours before bedtime, we took a taxi out to South Beach and enjoyed the night. The prices there are certainly inflated but we enjoyed ourselves.
The Ship
Our cruise was with Carnival cruise lines and we were on the Carnival Victory. We left port at 4 PM and spent the next day at sea. Some things became prominent in my mind that day:
(1) This cruise was a party cruise. Entertainment and drinking were the keys. Drinks were pushed on every part of the ship except in the cabin areas. The entertainment was designed to keep people from getting bored and there was entertainment for all ages and likes. There was a karaoke lounge, a lounge with 60’s music, a piano lounge, casino with entertainment, lounge with classical music, a disco, outdoor stage with a live band, bingo, trivia games, shows at night with singers, dancers and comedians, dance lessons provided by the cruise director, video games room for the youth, teen disco, gambling contests, singing contests in the karaoke lounge and dancing on the open deck. There were swimming pools and jazzuci tubs. And there was a lot of sun tanning!!!
Although drinks were pushed, there was not a lot obvious drunkenness or obnoxious behavior. Only once did I see ships officers breakup a situation and that was a fully clothed sex simulation on the open deck. Alcohol was, I believe, a factor.
(2) The ship consisted of many obvious profit centers. I already mentioned the drink pushing. On the price of each drink was added a 15% gratuity so there was incentive for the staff to sell as much as possible. Other profit centers included the casino, bingos, the spa and gift stores. It became obvious that the shore excursions sold on ship provided a kick back to Carnival and these were pushed hard. Also, the Carnival endorsed shops at the ports of call provide a source of revenue for Carnival. Passengers are encouraged to swipe their ship card in these stores. A jewelry store in one of the ports confirmed for me that he pays to Carnival a fee for every passenger that buys from him. Photography appears to be a big profit center. There are photographers are every place and they are in your face a lot. They begin before you even board the ship. Processing takes hours and then the photos are up for display. The photos are not cheap but a lot are sold in the name of memories.
(3) Staff. The staff on the ship are truly international. I remember people from Philippines, Indonesia, Romania, Canada, United States, China and other countries that are now escaping my memory.
(4) Gratuities. Gratuities are added on at two times. The first is 10 dollars per day per passenger added directly to your account. The bulk of this is for cabin staff but some is for dining room servers and a small portion is for miscellaneous and assistants. There was confusion as to whether or not this gratuity constituted the full salary for the cabin staff. We had been told by staff that this was the case – that if the gratuity was not paid there would be no salary. Other people seemed to have different information. So we are not certain about that. The second gratuity is on the drinks as previously mentioned. There is an expectation that passengers will tip the dining room servers and cabin staff as well – but this is not required.
The time on the ship does not need to be expensive if you don’t drink a lot or spend in the gift shops or the other profit centers.
All in all, the time on the ship was fun and relaxing. My wife enjoyed the karaoke (of course, she always does) and was chosen to sing Madonna at the last night entertainment in the main entertainment center.
One interesting outcome of the cruise for us was that we each lost any aches and pains that we previously had. That has caused us to re-evaluate our plans for the future.
We visited three ports of call; each with its own personality and features.
Costa Maya, Mexico
The first noticeable feature of this area as our ship came into dock was the stretching flat coastline with sandy beaches. Behind the coastline was lush green vegetation. The second noticeable feature was a manmade cement encampment that housed commercial establishments. Beer was $9USD per bottle!!! There were conflicting reports as to whether this was constructed by the cruise lines or by the local government. We received both conflicting reports. It did house the shops recommended by the cruise line. It also was fenced off with security guards at the gates. We were advised by people we me in the community outside this area that the local people were not allowed in unless they were going to work.
We did not book a tour on the ship, as was recommended. The tours were heavily pushed on the basis of safety and not being left behind if a tour got back late. The ship would leave without you if you were late and not on a ship booked tour.
We went outside the walls and rented a golf cart for $55USD for the day. Golf carts are allowed to drive on the ’streets? and roadways. Four people were allowed per golf cart – otherwise, there was a hefty fine if stopped by the police.
We then spent a wonderful day driving the area. We stopped at different beach areas where Americans and Europeans had purchased the land and build a home and bar. By far, the best was The Women’s Center with Susie. Susie made the best margaritas of anyplace in the world and the company was relaxed and fun. As we were leaving her place, our golf cart broke down. Susie quickly telephoned the owners who came out and replaced the cart.
On the way back to the ship, we saw a young alligator on the road. He was small – maybe two feet long. We stopped and then a local came by and picked him up. We then got to hold him before he was taken to water. That was an exciting experience.
There was a commercial flea market in the town. Prices are very negotiable and most of the items seem genuine. This area has an assortment of setups from one table stands to kiosks to bars and food outlets to massage setups. The merchants were openly inviting but not aggressive.I would buy from here before I would buy from the commercial encampment promoted by the cruise line.
I believe we had much more fun doing our own tour than did the people who paid much more money on the ship. Those who went on prearranged go-carts did not go any place we didn’t go. There were a few people who traveled some of the way we did but most stayed in the commercial encampment or on ship.
Georgetown, Grand Cayman
The second port of call on the cruise was Grand Cayman Islands. So as not to damage the coral reefs, the ships do not dock. They anchor off shore and smaller boats (holding 200 to 300 passengers) transfer the passengers to the island. We arrived on the island shortly after 7 AM so there was little to do except walk around and window shop. Again, we did not book a ship excursion but took our chances on finding excursions once we arrived. Again, we were very happy we did it that way. We hooked up with a private tour. Richard owned the taxi that took us to the boat which he also owned. His wife was doing the marketing onshore and Otis was his employee who took the passengers to Stingray City.
There were 10 people on the little speed boat which passed all the large tour boats on the way. Otis was a real ?water rat? and in the water with us feeding the stingrays, showing us how to hold then, putting them on our backs and setting up picture taking scenarios. He was an absolute delight. As I glanced at the large tour boats, I saw a lot of bored people. A few of them actually came to join our group and partake in the fun. There was no boredom in our group. After Stingray City, we stopped at the reef for snorkeling. All the necessary equipment was on board the boat. Again Otis had food to draw in the colorful fish. On the way back, Otis detoured to show us homes of famous people (Bill Gates, Sylvester Stalone) – the ship tours did not do this. He also stopped to look at the lizards and even tried to catch one. This trip was well worth one half the price we would have paid for a ship-sponsored excursion.
One benefit of Georgetown was a store that provided free telephone service (5 minutes per person) and free internet service (15 minutes per person). We were able to call our children back in Canada and make sure everything was all right.
Things are expensive in Georgetown. We did very little shopping but did check out the stores. We had two less than happy experiences in Georgetown. The first was that I left my hat at the dock after arriving back from Stingray City. It was a special hat my daughter had given me and I had become quite attached to it. Both Richard and Otis looked for it after being called but it was not to be found. I grieved its loss for the rest of the trip. The second slightly unpleasant experience was in a restaurant where my wife didn’t receive her food order and the server became rather snotty about it.
Grand Cayman is a wonderful place and we both look forward to returning. Our memories are so wonderful (except for my hat!!!)
Ocho Rios, Jamaica
Our third port of call was Ocho Rios. Again we arrived at 7 AM before any stores opened. And again, we did not book a ship-sponsored excursion.
The merchants, taxi drivers, street vendors – anybody trying to do any business at all – are very pushy. They are aggressive and push to the very edge to try to sell to you. At times the situations can be uncomfortable as the aggressive selling borders on intimidation.
Poverty is everywhere and it is understandable that the people wish to get money when the possibility exists.
After walking around for a while we were approached by a taxi driver that we felt comfortable with. Cedric drove us around for two hours and showed us sights that other passengers did not get to see. He talked about the people, the country, politics, schooling, vegetation and so on. He was a taxi driver who became a very knowledgeable tour guide. At the end of our tour, Cedric took us to a store where we could buy the gifts we wanted to take home and introduced us to the clerk. I was suspicious that this was just another way of him getting more money but at the end of the day after we had checked all the other stores, this one gave us the best prices.
We saw two different markets – one was a commercial flea marker selling trinkets, crafts, t-shirts and the like. This appeared oriented towards the tourists and I saw no locals in there. The second one sold fruits, vegetables and some trinkets. This was for the locals and there were no tourists in there – except us. This was the one time that we let our guard down and approached a potentially dangerous situation. We could have kidnapped or worse and no one would have known.
The one suggestion I have, if you go to Ocho Rios, is to be willing to say ?no thanks? a lot and to say it firmly.
This cruise was fun and relaxing. We would recommend it to everybody.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Cheap Travel Deals
When there is a budget to a vacation, all-inclusive deals are the best option. For a low-price, the all inclusive holiday packages feature round trip airfare, luxurious rooms, meals and drinks and resort activities. These cheap-travel deals are great if you have teenagers because they are not much of a concern and pretty independent. All-inclusive packages also feature a free tour or two and on-sight recreation.
With an all-inclusive deal you don’t need to spend on anything else, except for when you want to go out on your own, or feel the urge to go curio shopping.
The benefits of an all-inclusive package outweigh the cons of cheap vacations. The buffet-style allows you to experiment a wide variety of food. The service is always good plenty of are activities included in the package. The all-inclusive trips also include diving, snorkeling and a host of other water sports. There are several activities like swimming, tennis and golf that may come as part of the package.
A good bargain is to buy an all-inclusive package to Disney World, which includes many activities. Some include visits to water parks, biking, and horseback riding. There are also miniature golf courses for the golf aficionados. They offer free shuttles back and forth, and need not worry about renting a car, which is an added expense.
A family with older children might treasure an all-inclusive package with a skiing adventure in the Rockies or a trip to a ?dude? ranch in Arizona. Whatever your likes and dislikes, you can find activities for all to enjoy on an all-inclusive holiday. You should explore your destination on-line.
An all-inclusive vacation in Cancun sounds like heaven. The resort on a reef just off the major island is different from the regular hotels in the heart of Cancun. But you can be subjected to sales pitches to buy time-shares by low- priced resorts. What you thought would be a perfect vacation could turn into a bad dream when you realize that a few places, workers still expect a tip, even if there are notices advertising to the contrary. Tipping would also get you that extra bit of service. At the resorts, there are tip jars everywhere. Tipping is banned in some resorts and you need to find out in advance what kind of a resort you are going to.
Another disadvantage of taking an all inclusive holiday is that after reaching the resort, everything you do has to be paid for and some resorts also have limited access to activities. If not careful, a vacation you thought would help you to get away from it all may actually turn into a vacation that is restrictive and more costly. A trip to the mainland and back is the only feature offered by some packages. That means that they get you to the resort and back, to leave for home. All other visits and excursions become your responsibility and you have to pay for it.
All-inclusive packages provide you with a cheap vacation, but you should be sure that where you are going is all-inclusive. There are plenty of resources available online for vacationers to gather information about their destination. They need to check the tariff before making reservations. The tourists need to research online, on the resort and the regular services offered and compare those that are available within the ?all-inclusive? package. The difference should be clear and worth the money it costs.

Best Condition Check-Up Of A Used Car: When Old Gets Better
Today, buying a used car is as important as buying a new car. This is because the growing necessity and demand for cars is extremely important in an individual’s everyday life, especially if the daily activities require a lot of commuting and traveling.
So, buying used cars can be very feasible especially to those who have limited budgets. Actually, buying a used car, say, 2 to 4-year old cars will definitely save an individual as much as 25% to 50% when compared to buying a new one.
But, used cars are not created equal or they are not being maintained on the same level. Hence, it is important to know the proper way to choose used cars and the details to look for when buying one.
With all the many tips that are being offered these days, checking the condition of the used car is the best tip ever.
Here’s a list of the things to be checked before getting the car:
1. Exterior check
Buyers should check on the exterior portion of the car like the paint. Buyers should take note if there are any rusty places present on the exterior body.
Buyers should also make certain that the car is level when inspecting it. It should not sag to one side. If it does that is an indication of frame or spring damage. The tires should be well inflated and the lights should be in good condition.
Buyers should also check the other outer parts of the car like the disc brakes, the glass, the wheel rims, etc.
2. Interior check
It is best if the buyer inspects the interior portion of the car for things like its odor, the controls, the seats and the seat covers, and the pedal rubber. Everything should still be workable.
3. The air-conditioning unit of the car should be working well.
4. Trunk check
The trunk is the most neglected part of the car. Hence, it is important to know if the used car’s trunk area is still in good condition. It should never show any sign of rust accumulation and water entry due to holes and cracks.
5. The under hood test
The buyer of the used car should be aware of the wirings, fluids, belts, hoses, battery, and radiator of his car-to-be. It should not show any signs of damage, rust, or dents.
Best of all, before an individual finally decides on buying a particular used car, it is best if he or she will do a test drive first. In fact, it is one of the most important check-up in order to ensure the efficiency of the used car.About the Author: Gregory Ashton, your resident automobile enthusiast, bringing to you over 20 years of vehicular passion, and expertise; presents for your approval his insider secrets on selecting, buying, and maintianing the car that is ideal for you. http://www.best-car-buying-tips.com

Acid-A-Cal by Enzymatic Therapy:The body must maintain the proper acid-alkaline (pH) balance to function at optimal levels. Overly alkaline body fluids can make calcium harder to absorb. And calcium is essential for strengthening bones.
Acidifying compounds such as ammonium chloride, betaine hydrochloride, and calcium phosphate can help support balanced pH levels.
Acid-A-Cal by Enzymatic Therapyprovides these compounds along with important vitamins, minerals, and other natural factors. Acid-A-Cal is available in capsule form for easy assimilation.

NFC East – the Toughest Division in Football
Most of the divisions in the NFL this year seem fairly straight forward, at least at the top. There’s little doubt, for example, that Seattle will win the NFC West, Indy will top the AFC South, or Denver and San Diego will scrap for the AFC West crown. It gets much more complicated, however, when you look at the NFC East. It doesn’t take much digging to find an ‘expert’ that will make an argument that each of the four teams is destined to win it all. With all the different opinions it can be hard to figure out what will happen. I don’t have firm answers, but I can look at best and worst-case scenarios for each team in the division.
Part of the problem is that all of the teams have definite strengths, and they all have problems that make you pause. The odds are no help, either. The Cowboys are the current betting favorite to win it all at 8/5, but the gap between them and the fourth choice, the Redskins (11/4), is tiny. Compare that to the NFC West, where the Seahawks are 1/4 and the 49ers are 20/1 (and far from a bargain at that).
Dallas Cowboys (8/5)
Best case – Drew Bledsoe stays healthy and flourishes with all the offensive tools around him. Terrell Owens shows why he is worth all of the trouble. The ridiculously talented young defense grows into itself and dominates. Smart defensive moves, like shifting Greg Ellis from an undersized and overmatched defensive end to a strong side linebacker, will pay dividends. Twelve or 13 wins isn’t out of the question. Home field would be a huge advantage for this team in the playoffs.
Worst case – Owens explodes. The team is very vulnerable without him. Terry Glenn is a much better fit as a second choice than the primary receiver, and no one else on the roster is ready to step into the No. 2 spot. Running back could be another issue. Julius Jones and Marion Barber are both reasonably talented, but neither have so far shown that teams need to be scared of them like they do a true premier back. DeMarcus Ware is being relied upon to be a foundation of the 3-4 offense for years to come, but he slumped a bit midseason last year before picking it up again at the end. Tony Romo looked great in the preseason, but he has no regular season experience, and the game is different when teams actually care. A Bledsoe injury would definitely set the team back. Back as far as six or seven total wins.
My guess – I think Parcells will keep it together so he can go out on a high note. Owens will be fine this season, just like he was in his first year in Philly. I think they win 11 games and take the division.
New York Giants (9/4)
Best Case – Eli Manning keeps progressing, while his main weapon, Tiki Barber, contributes like he did last year and Jeremy Shockey gets his head together and steps up his game. The addition of several defensive players, highlighted by big name LB LaVarr Arrington, fixes the problems the team had. The D-line is still the sack machine it has been for a few years now. The team wins 11 or 12 games.
Worst case – They fall behind with a tough start to the season (Indianapolis, at Philadelphia, at Seattle) and never recover. The players brought in to fix the disastrous pass defense – R.W. McQuarters and Sam Madison – show their age and don’t plug the holes which desperately need to be plugged. Manning doesn’t advance significantly from last season, perhaps not fully recovered by a disastrous end to last season. Arrington hasn’t significantly contributed to a team for at least two seasons, and it’s more than possible that he may not be able to. Tiki Barber shows his age and can’t maintain the offensive pace that was crucial to last year’s success. The team only wins six or seven games.
My guess - Manning is solid, but not substantially better than last year. Barber shows some age and his production tails off to merely mortal levels. The defensive secondary will be better, but still far from elite. The Giants win nine games and make a strong claim for a wild card spot.
Philadelphia Eagles (5/2)
Best case – Last year is just a mulligan and the team moves on and returns to earlier glory days. The offensive line is improved, the defense is deep if not overwhelming and they start the season healthy. If they can stay that way, they will already be way ahead of last season. The defense was terrible last year, but draft picks and free agents should reverse that trend. Before last year the team had won at least 11 in five straight seasons. They could do the same thing again.
Worst case – The injury bug is still in the system. The schedule could be too much for the team – besides the divisional rivals they play Carolina, Indy and Tampa Bay. The offense is better but still not good enough. They only end up with seven wins.
My guess – Owens is gone, but they didn’t really replace him. Without a primary target it could be a long year for McNabb. The Eagles would be a decent team in most conferences, but I don’t see how they compete in this one. A record of 8-8 would be a success and the playoffs are out of the question in my mind.
Washington Redskins (11/4)
Best case - Al Saunders joins Joe Gibbs’ staff after five seasons in Kansas City. He turned the Chiefs into an offensive powerhouse, and made superstars out of both Priest Holmes and Larry Johnson. Clinton Portis has the tools to become even better under Saunders. The receiving corps is much better with the additions of Antwaan Randle El and Brandon Lloyd, and TE Chris Cooley continues to improve. The pass rush is acceptable and the defensive secondary is very good. The team could win 10 games and make the playoffs as a wild card.
Worst case – Mark Brunell struggles like he did at the end of last season, and no one else is ready to take his place. The Saunders offense performs more like it did in preseason (no points by the first team offense) than it did in Kansas City. Portis doesn’t bounce back from his preseason shoulder injury as fast as anyone hoped. The team struggles to 6 wins.
My guess – I don’t get a good feeling from the ‘Skins. Too many questions, especially at QB. I expect seven or eight wins and a new coach next season.

Re-energise your Business – Remove sources of Friction and Delay
Sometimes delays are important, but if you’re not adding value, then it is not good.
Some level of friction and delay are prevalent in virtually every business. Depending on what you are trying to achieve, they are not automatically bad things. There are times when deliberately slowing down (introducing delay to) an activity is the right thing to do. But where they are a result of poorly evolved processes, lack of training or resources, or lack of knowledge – it’s time to take action and remove them from your life!
How can we define Friction and Delay? Friction is whatever gets in the way of a smooth and uninterrupted flow of events. Think of sliding along a bench covered in sandpaper versus one covered with oil. Delay is adding time without adding value.
High levels of these in any business are expensive, leading to lower productivity, and higher costs.
Why do businesses tolerate these levels of friction and delay??
They are considered a cost of doing business.
Many business owners don’t know or realize that there is another way of doing things – a way that could really improve their business.
The business suffers from inertia when it comes to improvements.
Inefficiencies cause significantly lower productivity as employees create workarounds to get the job done. Over time, the workarounds become the accepted process, and the opportunity for taking action on the source of the problem is forgotten.
Too much time is wasted on dealing with the symptoms.
Many owners spend tremendous time and energy dealing with the results of delay and friction in their organizations without striking at the cause of the problems.
They don’t know what to do.
Often when owners do identify the cause of friction and delay, they do not know how to reduce or eliminate the friction and delay.
So how do you identify areas of delay and friction?
Ask people what drives them crazy about their job.
Ask people what they know irritates their customers, both external and internal customers.
Ask them what they are tolerating.
Ask people where they waste the most time.
Note: don’t confuse busy-ness with business. Look for things that are taking time and energy away from the main goals.
Ask customers (or have people ask their customers): What are we doing that is causing friction for you? What are we doing that is causing you delay, frustration or confusion?
Look for work piling up in front of some resource or person.
Typically that’s a sign of a bottleneck that is causing friction and delay for the business overall.
Observe people as they do their work.
What are they wasting time doing? Note: this can be applied at all levels of the organization!
Participate in process mapping session – map out the suspect process with the people who do the work.
Now that you’ve identified the sources of friction and delay, how do you go about removing them?
1. Eliminate the step.
If it doesn’t add value, just don’t do it.
2. Streamline the step.
Are there parts of the step that don’t add value? Can it be done a better smarter way?
Hint: the people doing the work most often know what would help most.
3. Increase the throughput at the bottleneck.
- Consider increasing capacity – longer shifts, more machines, additional employees.
- Consider outsourcing some or all of the work – can be external or internal to business.
- Consider automating the process.
Special Note: automate the process only AFTER making sure that the process works! This may sound trivial, but more money has been wasted by small (and large) businesses automating processes that were broken in the first place so that more mistakes were made quicker at higher cost.
4. Slow the entire system to the natural flow.
This may sound counter-intuitive, but it prevents having to do things over, and accentuates the need to improve bottlenecks. Doing things right the first time eliminates error and rework, reducing the cost to the business.
Finally, because all businesses are dynamic and people are human, friction and delay can creep back into your business pretty easily. Develop a mindset of continuous improvement and harness the abilities of everyone in your business to always be looking for ways to do things differently or better.

Your Nutrition and Vitamins – Do You Really Need These?
As it impacts your health, the quality of your vitamin supplement cannot be overemphasized. Costing more, a vitamin and mineral supplement that uses the highest and best ingredients within a manufacturing process that is pharmaceutical grade is the only one to consider for your health. Reviewing the choices at a discount store can be very misleading. Cheap prices could mean low-quality ingredients or an unsafe manufacturing facility that produces fast output for humans one day and for horses the next.
It is amusing to watch how quickly dietary supplement manufacturers add the latest ?miracle? nutrient to a pill. One week you hear on the news about some discovery in the Amazon jungle and proven by the Mayo Clinic to cure death itself. Then, within mere weeks, the ?major? brands have this nutrient in its product. Then the marketing hype really hits high gear. But what is rarely told is how much of this miraculous compound is actually in their product, or how much is really needed by the body to begin with.
Search for companies that include efficacious amounts of the active ingredients (efficacious means enough to have the desired effect) within their product.
The quality of the raw materials is crucial as well. Many companies use cheap, less reliable plant material to create their supplements. The active ingredient within each individual plant varies according to amount of sunlight, rain, and soil quality.
The highest quality supplements come from standardized herbal extracts. The exact amount of the active ingredient is known every time and so a product can be made to precise standards of quality and effectiveness.
Supplementing your diet with vitamins and minerals is less desirable than getting what you need from your diet. Because nutrients, vitamins, minerals, etc. vary from food to food, using an online meal planner can make a difficult task very easy. Look for one (check out the demo here at The Nutrition Guru!) has the capability to suggest what foods you need to balance your diet.
You can benefit from quality vitamin and mineral supplements when incorporated into a well planned nutrition program.
